Rob Zombie is Remaking The Blob

August 28, 2009

Rob Zombie, whose Halloween II opens today, will write, direct and produce a remake of the 1958 horror classic The Blob, which starred Steve McQueen.

In the original, an object from space crashes into a field, containing a red blob-like substance that absorbs the humans it contacts and grows exponentially.

"My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change," Zombie told the trade. "That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now."

Zombie will produce with Genre Co.'s Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten; original "Blob" producer Jack H. Harris; and Judith Parker Harris of Worldwide Entertainment Corp. and Andy Gould.

They are developing the project as an R-rated film that will cost around $30 million to make.

Production will begin next spring.

Movieline has posted a great interview with Stunt Choreographer of the Year, Garrett Warren. In the interview, Warren reveals some details about being the stuntman for Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2 and filming The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson.

First up is the bit on Iron Man 2:

I had brought two whips with me that are made of kangaroo hide that are incredibly well made. You can perform all sorts of tricks and cracks with them. In the movie, you won’t see those whips. They’ll digitally replace it with other types of whips. I don’t know if I’m at liberty to say what the whips will look like, but they’re going to be these super whips that have an awful lot of power. They can cut through cars, they can do an awful lot of damage. And when the movie comes out, you’ll see that he doesn’t do just whip-cracks and grabbing people. He lays waste to an awful lot of vehicles and street pieces and other things.

So will it be you we’ll be seeing in a lot of these sequences?
[Laughs] Any time you see some stunt where someone might have gotten hurt, then yes. At one point, Whiplash had to get hit by a car, and Mickey did the lead up to the stunt, and I did the stunt where the car came in and hit me and took me to the fence. So yes, you’ll see a combination of Mickey and myself. And when it comes to the whip routine, I have to admit, Mickey Rourke did a really good job with the whips. However, the suit was very painful at times. It was this big metal piece that wasn’t very comfortable, so he didn’t always want to do the whip routines every take. So I’d go in and do the whip routines.

And this is how he described the "Tintin" movie:

It looks an awful lot like the cartoon. They really wanted to bring the cartoon to life. So if you know the cartoon, or have seen the books, that’s what it looks like. It’s beautiful. You would have thought to yourself that they would have tried to go for a more realistic look, but they’re actually trying to preserve the look and essence of the original Tintin characters.

The Hollywood Reporter says Ericson Core (Invincible) will direct XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, Columbia Pictures' third installment in the franchise. Neal Moritz and Joe Roth are producing.

Vin Diesel is reprising the role he originated in the 2002 movie, directed by Rob Cohen. Diesel and Cohen skipped the 2005 sequel, XXX: State of the Union, which starred Ice Cube and was directed by Lee Tamahori.

Core, a cinematographer-turned-director, worked as DP on Diesel's 2001 film The Fast and the Furious.

John Brancato and Michael Ferris (Terminator Salvation) wrote the script for "Xander Cage." It involves Cage's return to the National Security Agency after an eight-year absence. Richard Wilkes, who wrote the original movie, did a recent polish.

The studio aims to roll cameras early next year.

Next Batman Movie to be Fully Shot in IMAX?

Ain't It Cool News has posted an interesting rumor saying that Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. Pictures could be planning to shoot the follow-up to The Dark Knight completely in IMAX format:

The THIRD chapter of Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader's saga could very well be FULLY shot in IMAX, not IMAX Digital - but the beautiful, stunning IMAX that we saw pieces of THE DARK KNIGHT in.

Now this is something that I'm sure a lot of you will feel is a no-brainer. Nolan blew us away with the IMAX sequences in that film - but it was a very tough process to work in. Mainly due to the limitations of how many available real IMAX rigs there are. Not only that, but lenses had to be created, adapted and god forbid one broke down. Part of the reason that Nolan went forward with INCEPTION first - besides taking a creative break from the cape and cowl adventures... was possibly to create a few new IMAX cameras made to his specs. Once again - the cost of shooting an entire feature film on IMAX... the stock, the time it takes to reset, to load, to move the cameras... Well... it is daunting, but as Nolan proved with DARK KNIGHT - the difference is stunning.

We'll have to wait and see if this does indeed happen.

Avatar Teaser Trailer Breaks Apple Record

20th Century Fox announced today that the teaser trailer for James Cameron's Avatar received 4 million streams in its first day on Apple.com, shattering the previous record of 1.7 million:

Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the AVATAR teaser trailer has become the most-viewed trailer ever on the popular iTunes Movies Trailer section of apple.com, which Thursday hosted the long-awaited public first look at writer-director James Cameron’s motion picture epic. The teaser registered over four million streams in its first day on the site, shattering the previous record of 1.7 million.

On Friday, the trailer arrived in theaters around the world, presented in all formats, including IMAX® 3-D, IMAX® 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D.

The record–shattering online trailer debut marked the launch of AVATAR DAY, an unprecedented experience that also saw the unveiling of special scenes – in 3-D – prepared especially by Cameron for this event. The extended look at AVATAR unspooled for two showings only Friday evening. The U.S. showings were held in select IMAX® 3-D theaters, and international unveilings were in select digital 3-D and IMAX® 3-D theaters. Reservations for all showings were completely booked.

In addition, Fox took the wraps off its special “3-D”/lenticular one-sheet posters for the film, Ubisoft® unveiled the trailer for their videogame James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, and Mattel revealed the action figures for the film’s Avatar and alien Na’vi characters.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

AVATAR opens in theaters everywhere December 18, 2009.

Robin Williams accidental star of new indie comedy

Robin Williams accidental star of new indie comedy

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Yes, you want to have a great screenplay and a talented director, but no project ever gets made until a star's attached.

You simply can't make a movie without somebody to play the lead and having a star is going to help if you're looking for financing or distribution.

Case in point: "World's Greatest Dad," which opened Friday in New York to a modest $10,300 and comes to California on August 28. Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, it's a thoughtful but outrageous comedy starring Robin Williams as a troubled high school poetry teacher and single parent.

After the accidental death of his insufferably nasty teenage son (Daryl Sabara from "Spy Kids") he suddenly finds himself with the fame and fortune he's always craved. Only question: Can he live with knowing how it came about?

Although the role fits Williams like a glove, it wasn't written with him in mind. In fact, Goldthwait told me, he didn't even plan on asking him to read it.

"Robin and I are old friends and he really liked 'Sleeping Dogs Lie,'" he explained, referring to his 2006 drama that also screened at Sundance. "I really wasn't trying to hit him up to be in the movie."

So what happened? "I was at dinner with him and another friend and I was telling him the new story and he was like, 'Well, can I read it?'"

Moreover, Goldthwait added, "I really wouldn't have written the movie for Robin as a poetry teacher if I had him in mind because I think he covered that pretty well already in 'Dead Poets Society.' So I was really shocked when he wanted to be in it."

On the other hand, poetry be dammed -- this was such a good fit for these two friends. "I think the character is a little bit based on life lessons that Robin and I had to learn as adult men."

Williams (to Goldthwait about a week into production): "Oh, I get it. I'm playing you and me."

The payoff: "He said it's the most comfortable he's ever felt on a set, which I believe is true because he and I are friends. It wasn't like we would do a scene where you would go, 'Okay, we'll do one. And now we'll do one where you ad lib.' We would keep trying different things, but it was very collaborative."

Goldthwait wrote "Dad" about two years ago. To write he just goes off to a hotel and works around the clock. "I wrote this one in about five days. My detractors would probably say I should spend another day or two on it!"

Attaching Williams definitely accelerated getting "Dad" made. He and Goldthwait wanted to be sure they did the film with "the right people" and avoided the "temptation to make it a zany comedy."

What they had in mind from the start was that the film "wasn't going to try to exploit Robin's name" and wouldn't be marketed as "a comedy with a very silly trailer. We wanted to make sure people kind of got the humor of it."

"It was the folks at Darko (Entertainment) who financed it," he said. A company founder, Richard Kelly, directed "Donnie Darko" and is a producer of "Dad."

Magnolia Pictures got involved after seeing "Dad" at Sundance and here, too, Goldthwait found himself working with a friend: "Eamonn Bowles, who runs Magnolia, is actually an old friend of mine because he hangs out in a bar that my friend runs in New York. Eamonn's always been very supportive of what we're doing."

Asked what "Dad's" budget was, Goldthwait replied, "I don't know if Magnolia would be too happy with answering that. My guess is it probably would be about two days of shooting on "Night at the Museum" (in which Williams played Teddy Roosevelt)."

Shooting got under way about a year ago for five weeks, a lot less time than Williams is used to.

Williams (at the time): "Is this going to be eight or nine weeks?"

Goldthwait (laughing): "I guess if I were doing 'Lawrence of Arabia' yeah, but it's about four or five weeks."

They shot in the Seattle area, but not only for the tax benefits.

Acknowledging that "this sounds really pretentious," Goldthwait said he's a fan of "Harold and Maude" with its big pine trees. Even though he knows it was shot in northern California, thinking about those trees subconsciously prompted him to want to film in the northwest.

As for casting Williams' difficult son Kyle, Goldthwait said, "Daryl came in and was supposed to audition for the role of Andrew, the sweet boy," who's Kyle's only friend. "He just lied to me and told me he was there for Kyle."

Despite liking Sabara's audition, Goldthwait wasn't sure about hiring him, worrying that he might really be "a bad kid because he stayed in character."

Calling around to check him out, he laughed, "I heard people going, 'Daryl? He's a really nice guy. What are you talking about?' As much as I wanted someone to do a good job on the role, I didn't want to hang out with someone who really was like Kyle."

Canadian authorities confirmed Sunday night that Jenkins, sought after for the brutal murder of his wife, bikini model Jasmine Fiore, was found dead at the Thunderbird Motel in Hope, British Columbia, near Vancouver. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's Federal Border Integrity Unit say it's believed the 32-year-old, who is a native of Canada, took his own life. "We aren't releasing that cause of death at this time," Sgt. Duncan Pound tells People. "What we're prepared to say is that the preliminary evidence at this time appears to be a suicide.

Dicaprio's 'Shutter Island' Postponed Until 2010

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Leonardo DiCaprio's new movie Shutter Island has fallen victim to the ongoing financial crisis -- its release has been pushed back until next year.

DiCaprio teamed up with director Martin Scorsese for the thriller, in which he plays an escaped prisoner, and was preparing to promote the film when it hit theaters in October.

But bosses at movie studio Paramount Pictures have had to re-shuffle their schedule -- and as a result, fans will have to wait until February next year to watch the gothic movie.

Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey says, "Our 2009 slate was green-lit in a very different economic climate and as a result we must remain flexible and willing to recalibrate and adapt to a changing environment.

"Leonardo DiCaprio is among the most talented actors working today, and Martin Scorsese is not just one of the world's most significant filmmakers, but also a personal friend. Following a highly successful 2009, we have every confidence that Shutter Island is a great anchor to lead off our 2010 slate and the shift in date is the best decision for the film (and) the studio."

Paramount chiefs have already paid huge sums to market their summer hits Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
